Set in a dynamically mapped real-world environment, BUGSKILL challenges players to eliminate all flies in sight using their hands and quick reflexes. Players earn money by killing flies, and they can do so by slapping against surfaces, clapping them in air, and purchasing a variety of power-ups to snap them up.
The project was first conceived as a prototype during the XR Foundations and Prototyping Bootcamp Cohort. After receiving enormous support online, I was selected as a team lead by cohort mentors and led a group of 4 students to further develop the project for the Meta Quest Presence Platform Hackathon. Currently, it’s shipped and live as Early Access on the Meta Quest store.
This mixed reality game is built with Unity and designed specifically for the Quest 3, as it leverages a wide range of Meta Quest SDKs, including Passthrough, Hand Tracking, Depth API, Mixed Reality Utility Kit, and Audio SDK.
We used the Scene API and Mixed Reality Utility Toolkit to procedurally calculate the flight paths of flies and spawn them near specific areas. Colliders in the scene volumes allow flies to detect and avoid obstacles, while the toolkit enables generating random points on vertical or upward-facing surfaces.
The game is designed with hand tracking only to simulate the experience of catching flies in real life. Wide Motion Mode improves hand tracking accuracy and reduces lag, supporting fast-paced gameplay. Portrayed in this animation, the player is waving with single hand in air to slow down the fly, and then clapping with both hands to kill.
If player’s hand is colliding with a surface and a fly at the same time, the gesture will be recognized as a slap and the fly will be squashed on the spot.

We implemented spatial audio using Meta's Audio SDK to help users locate flies by sound, including audio cues and the Doppler effect for flies moving toward or away from the player.
Here’s the list of power-up items that’ll be available in the release:
